When in Greece, Eat Traditionally!
Many people have asked, if I were on one of the Greek Islands, what would a traditional meal be like? There are many answers to this question. One of the dishes Greece is known for is the Souvlaki Kebab: marinated chicken, pork, or shrimp on a long skewer grilled over an open flame. One excellent place to try such a dish is Papaspiros Restaurant 728 Lake Street in Oak Park Illinois (708) 358-1700. The friendly staff, and ambiance of the Greek Islands will transport you to an ancient yet fully modern country, full of historical cities, vineyards, mountains and more. Pictured below is a Pork Tenderloin Souvlaki Kebab seared on the open flame with grilled vegetables, rice pilaf with red sauce and simmered green beans.
Another signature meal of Greece is the Mousaka which is layers of potato, grilled vegetables and vegetarian or meat tomato sauce, topped with a creamy Bechamel and baked to perfection. For anyone who loves eggplant parmesan or lasagna, Mousaka is a must try at Papaspiros.
A further vegetarian entree which is highly desirable in Greece is the Spanakopita: Feta, spinach and herb pie. Light flaky layers of Filo dough are painted with melted butter and filled with a freshly prepared mixture of creamy feta cheese, fresh spinach, minced herbs, onion, and other specialty spices. Baked to golden flaky perfection Spanakopita will leave you full and satisfied. Try the dinner or appetizer versions!
One final main course traditional to the Greek Isles which bears mentioning is the Dolmades Dinner. Ground meat, rice and spices delicately wrapped in grape leaves, drizzled with an Avgolemono lemon sauce, served with Greek potato or rice, and choice of vegetable, will transport you back to the ancient culinary triumphs of Mediterranean Greece.
Rather than just view a picture of these culinary classics, stop in to Papaspiros Restaurant and experience a taste of the Greek Islands for yourself.
